China to Crush Covid Protests with a Heavy Hand

December 5, 2022

December 5, 2022: With growth in China’s financial and technological strength, the attacks on People’s revolt on Zero Covid policy of Xi Jinping is going to be much more sophisticated than the one mounted in 1989 at Tiananmen Square. It will also be more effective in crushing the revolt.

Most analysts agree that China’s crackdown on COVID protests will be severe and effective. Police and government officials, using facial recognition, iPhones and online applications, will be able to identify and punish protesters. Leaders of the protest movement will be tracked down and may “disappear.” Censorship is strong and will likely get stronger. Force will be used where necessary to crush opposition. If the democratic world is not able to take the lead in developing and using AI/ML technologies and if it is able to use state power to harness large databases and if market-force driven tech companies of the democratic world are unable to equivalent databases, China may be able to take a lead. This may have consequences for not only surveillance and control of the people in China, these may start affecting and limiting the freedom of people in countries outside China also.

Smaller countries may become dependent on China financially and may be unable to save their democratic liberties, as these are slowly chipped away by a technologically strong power like China. Thus James Marape, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea said that the emerging economy of his small country could not afford to take sides when there is a stand-off between China and USA-Australia.
