Nov 29, 2022: Campaigning for the 1st phase of Gujarat Election Ends, Voting on December 1
A long campaign by political parties for Gujarat Elections is all set to be fought in two phases, on December 1 and 5.
A fresh political row has erupted after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s ‘Ravan’ remark about prime minister Narendra Modi. The Congress veteran made the remarks during a campaign rally in Ahmedabad on Monday, days before the Gujarat Assembly election.
During the rally, Kharge said that Modi keeps aside his duties and work as the prime minister, and keeps campaigning in ‘corporation, MLA, MP elections. “In all these campaigns, he (Modi) only talks about himself. ‘Don’t look at anyone else, just look at Modi and vote’… how many times do we have to see your face? How many forms do you have? Do you have 100 heads like Ravan?” Kharge declared to laughter and cheers.
The Congress President’s remarks did not go down well with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. In a tweet, he said that ‘bereft of any development agenda and support from the people’, the opposition party is out to abuse Gujarat and Gujaratis. “The statement made by Kharge ji against PM Narendra Modi ji is testimony to Congress President’s hate for Gujaratis. People of Gujarat will reject them this time too for such behavior,” Patel tweeted.
In the evening of Monday, 28th November, addressing an election rally oat Naranpura , Ahmedabad, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that BJP has changed the identity of Ahmedabad from a city of ‘Begum and Badshahs’ to the city of Karnavati.
Going against the predictions of all the Opinion Polls, Arvind Kejriwal, the National Convenor of AAP, predicted that AAP would win more than 92 out of 182 seats of Gujarat Assembly, at the elections of December 2022. Regarding specific seats, Kejriwalji predicted that in Surat, AAP was slated to win 7-8 seats, including the Katargam seat from which Gopal Italia, AAP’s state president, is contesting.
WHO WILL WIN MANSA? : From 1995 to 2007, a BJP candidate won from Mansa constituency. However, in 2012 and in 2017, a Congress candidate won from the seat.
Jayanti S. Patel from BJP and Babusinh Mohansinh Thakor from Congress are the candidates in the fray in Mansa.
MORBI CONSTITUENCY: It is the city, where the bridge, built in 1879 had collapsed into Machhu river on 30th October 2022. Amrutiya Kantilal Shivlal, who saved several lives during the collapse of the bridge, has been given the BJP ticket in Morbi. He had been elected by Morbi as its MLA from 1995 to 2017. In 2017, Brijesh Merja won the seat for Congress by defeating Amrutiya. But in 2020, Merja resigned from both the Congress party and the Legislative Assembly. At the bye-election, Merja was able to get a BJP ticket and won the seat for BJP.
In 2022, Amrutiya Kantilal Shivlal is again the BJP candidate from Morbi. Congress has fielded Jayantilala Jerajbhai Patel from this constituency. Pankaj Ransariya is the AAP candidate.
