October 23, 2022: The First Plenum of the Central Committee of CCP
At the first plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, held on Sunday, 23rd October 2022, Xi Jinping was elected as the General Secretary of CCP for a third term. This will make it possible for him to be elected as the President of China in March 2023, at the annual parliamentary session of China.
Xi was also re-appointed as the Chairman of the Central Military Commission for 5 years at the first Plenum.
Note: Xi had laid the groundwork to rule beyond a decade when he eliminated the two-term limit on the presidency in 2018.
Xi Jinping, 69, introduced the new Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) consisting of his loyalists. PSC consists of the following:
- 1.Li Qiang, 63, Chief of Shanghai Communist Party
- 2. Zhao Leji
- 3. Wang Huning (Note: Zhao Leji and Wang Huning were members of the PSC from 2017-22 also.)
- 4. Cai Qi,
- 5. Ding Xuexiang
- 6. Li Xi.
