Ukraine War: Peace Proposals

On 27th December, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had their fourth exchange since 24th February 2022. Zelensky asked Modi to help bring peace by implementing his 10-point peace plan, that he had presented at the G-20 meeting at Bali, Indonesia.

President Zelensky’s proposals demand the withdrawal of Russian troops from the whole of Ukraine and reparations.

Writing in the Spectator, Henry Kissinger said that the world had sleep-walked into WW I, even though no country wanted a war in 1914. He has said that the peace agreement at the end of World War I led to World War II, since the allies decided to humiliate Germany further after its defeat at WW I.

DiGiNews360 agrees with Henry Kissinger for the need for an immediate ceasefire. The decisions about the territories may be by mutual agreement. Or it may be forced by the Security Council. Alternatively, it may be by a referendum of the people of the four territories, as suggested by Henry Kissinger.

Russia is a member of G 20 and SCO, both of which are to be held in India during 2023. President Putin may decide to attend the meetings.

With India hosting the G20 presidency, President Zelensky wished Prime Minister “a fruitful presidency” for G20. But he added that he hoped that India’s Presidency of G 20 will be “fruitful for not someone in particular but for everyone in the world who values peace”. This oblique reference to Russia as “someone” may be understood by way of the great reception Zelensky received at the US Congress and the promises of weapons, including the Patriot system, and budgetary support by President Biden.

The Indian Government’s statement, about the exchange with President Zelensky, said that Prime Minister Modi ”reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, and said that both sides should revert to dialogue and diplomacy to find a lasting solution to their differences”.

Earlier, on 6th December, Dymtro Kuleba, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, had attacked India for benefiting from Ukrainian suffering.

He did not refer to India’s humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. Nor did he refer to India’s stand for cessation of hostilities. But he was worried about the ‘benefit’ of purchase of Russian crude at a concessional rate. He did not say a word about the suffering of the poor in the world due to high prices of gas and the high inflation, caused by the Ukraine war.

Mr. Kuleba criticized India for not calling the Ukraine war a “Russian aggression against Ukraine”.

The next day Russia’s Foreign Minister had asked Ukraine to come to the negotiation table and stop the hostilities in Ukraine. He said that otherwise the issue will be sorted out by the Russian Army.

DiGiNews360 demands immediate ceasefire and a normalization of the trade in crude oil and gas markets so that the high inflation can be brought under control.
