Tim Berners-Lee: Web3 is not the web at all

Nov 4, 2022: TB-L: blockchain is NOT a viable solution for tomorrow’s Internet

LISBON: Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who was a co-inventor of the World Wide Web in 1989, said at the Web Summit 2022, the future version of the Internet should be more decentralized than it is today and it should not be dominated by powerful players like Amazon, Microsoft and Google. He said that Blockchain protocols are slow and expensive to be useful for the web of the future. He added that Personal data stores, for the web of the future, should be fast, cheap and personal, whereas Blockchain is slow, expensive and public.

He said that Inrupt, his new StartUp, aims to give users control of their own data, including how it’s accessed and stored through three ways:

  • A global “single sign-on” feature that lets anyone log in from anywhere.
  • Login IDs that allow users to share their data with others.
  • A “common universal API,” or application programming interface, that lets apps pull data from any source.
