December 5, 2022: Finland PM Sanna Marin met the Australian PM Anthony Albanese in Sydney on Friday 2 December. The two leaders reaffirmed the common vision based on equality, trust and shared values. They underlined the need to work together in strengthening their resilience as open and democratic societies and in fostering sustainable development. They agreed that managing complex supply chains, energy sources and investing in trustworthy critical and emerging technologies was needed to promote economic, political, social and environmental stability as well as human rights.

Both the leaders condemned the Russian aggression in Ukraine and committed to support Ukraine.

In her address at Sydney’s Lowy Institute Think Tank, the Prime Minister focused on the lessons learned from recent crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war of aggression. These include the need to deepen cooperation between democracies in developing new technologies, ensuring a sufficient skills base and securing the availability of critical raw materials and medical supplies.

“I’ll be brutally honest with you, Europe isn’t strong enough to be able to face Russia alone. We would be in trouble without the United States,” she said.
