Diwali as the Bandi Chhor Diwas

His father Guru Arjanji, the fifth Guru, had been assassinated by Jahangir, the Mughal King in 1606 CE, because he refused to remove a few verses, which were considered to be against Islam, from Guru Granth Sahib. In 1612, Jehangir imprisoned Guru Hargobind sahib ji, the sixth Guru in the Gwalior prison. In the same prison were imprisoned 52 other rulers of small states.

Near Diwali, Jahangir fell ill and despite all efforts by his Hakims, his condition did not improve. Mian Mir, a Sufi saint, advised Jahangir to release Guru Hargobind sahib ji. Guruji did not agree to be released till the 52 rulers were also released. Jahangir agreed to release those, who could hold on to his Palla. As Guruji was coming out of the prison, all the 52 rulers, held onto his long Palla and all of them were also released. When Guruji, along with the 52 rulers, reached Amritsar, it was Diwali Day, which was celebrated as Bandi Chhor Diwas.
